When you look at someone wearing a kimono, your eye naturally goes to the obi, the wide sash around the waist. Right in the middle, you may notice a tiny ornament. This is an obidome. It isn't a buckle that holds anything together. It's purely decoration, threaded onto a thin cord called an obijime that's tied around the obi.
Obidome have been made from many materials, including silver, gold, coral, glass, carved shell, and lacquer. Many show seasonal themes, like cherry blossoms in spring or autumn leaves in fall, so a single small piece can say a lot about the season and the wearer's taste. Their history is closely tied to metalwork.
Obidome are said to have become fashionable in the late Edo period, and their designs are said to have been influenced by the small metal fittings on swords. No, despite the name. The obi is tied at the back, and the cord around it helps keep its shape. The obidome is just an ornament on that cord.
名前とは違って、留めてはいません。帯は後ろで結び、その上に締めるひもが形を保つのを助けます。帯留めは、そのひもにつけた飾りにすぎません。
Do I need a special cord to wear one?
着けるのに特別なひもが要りますか。
Usually, yes. Most obidome need a thin cord that fits through the loop on the back. Many people use a cord called a sanbu-himo, which is just under one centimeter wide.
たいていは要ります。帯留めの多くは、裏の輪に通る細いひもが必要です。幅1センチ足らずの「三分紐」というひもを使う人が多くいます。

帯留めは、帯締めに通して帯の正面に飾る装身具。名前に「留め」とあるが、帯を留める役目はない。江戸後期の文化年間（1804年〜）ごろに流行したとされ、意匠には刀の目貫や柄頭（つかがしら）といった刀装具の影響が見られる。明治時代に廃刀令（1876年）が出ると、刀装具を作っていた金工は仕事を失い、置物や装身具などに技を向ける者が多かった。帯留めをつけるには、裏の金具に通る細い帯締めが必要で、幅が約9ミリの「三分紐」がよく使われる。
