HOW TO
How to give gifts and souvenirs in Japan
Step by step
Think about how many people will share it. For an office, snacks that are wrapped one by one are handy.
Take the gift out of the shopping bag and hand over just the gift.
Hold it with both hands, facing the right way for the other person.
Say something short, like, This is just a little something, or, I hope you like it.
When you receive a gift, take it with both hands and say thank you.
If they say no at first, offer it again. They may just be being polite.
Background
英語では「It's a way of saying thanks to coworkers who covered for you.」
英語では「I hope you like it.」
外国人に全部を守ってもらう必要はないが、「Some people avoid sets of four because four sounds like death.」
Did you know?
The small decoration on formal gifts, called noshi, started as a strip of dried abalone. Today it's usually just printed on the paper.
The cords on gift envelopes come in two knots. A bow that can be retied is for happy events that can happen again, and a tight knot is for things that should happen only once, like weddings.
Ochugen in summer and oseibo at the end of the year are seasonal gifts for people who've helped you. Fewer people send them now, and it varies a lot by family and company.
Etiquette
Don't give or take a gift with one hand.
Don't give something too expensive. It can make the other person feel they owe you.
Ask before you open a gift in front of the giver.
Many people avoid giving potted plants to someone in the hospital.
Q&A in English
Should I open the gift right away?
It depends. Traditionally, many people opened gifts later, but these days many open them right away. If you're not sure, just ask, May I open it?
迷ったら「May I open it?」
Why do people refuse a gift at first?
It's a way of being modest. Often they'll accept after you offer a second time.
Do I need to give something back?
For small souvenirs, a thank-you is enough. For bigger gifts, like wedding gifts, people often give a return gift later.
