HOW TO
How to use a Japanese toilet
Step by step
First, find the stop button. It's usually marked 止 and colored orange or red.
The shower button washes your bottom. The bidet button is a front wash for women.
Many models let you change the water pressure and temperature with plus and minus buttons.
Put used toilet paper in the toilet and flush it.
To flush, look for a lever, a button, or a sensor. The big and small symbols use different amounts of water.
For a squat toilet, face the raised, rounded hood and squat over it.
If there are toilet slippers, wear them inside and leave them there when you come out.
Background
外国人にはふしぎに思われることが多いので、「It just plays a flushing sound for privacy. It doesn't flush.」
Did you know?
Washlet is actually a brand name from TOTO, first sold in 1980. By 2025, over 80 percent of Japanese households with two or more people had a bidet toilet seat.
The famous flushing-sound device, Otohime, is also a TOTO product from 1988. It was made partly to stop people from flushing again and again to cover up sounds.
In 2017, Japanese toilet makers agreed on the same picture symbols for the main buttons, so visitors could understand them more easily.
