Chopstick and restaurant manners in Japan

Step by step

Before eating, many people put their hands together and say itadakimasu, a way of saying thanks for the food.

Hold your chopsticks so that only the top one moves.

When you're not using them, lay your chopsticks on the rest or across the edge of your plate.

For shared dishes, use the serving chopsticks if there are some.

It's fine to slurp ramen and soba noodles.

When you finish, say gochisosama, which means thank you for the meal.

Pay at your table or at the register, depending on the restaurant.

Don't leave a tip. It isn't expected in Japan.

Background

英語では「Both remind people of funerals.」

「Don't stick them upright in rice, and don't pass food chopstick to chopstick.」

Did you know?

In Japan, people usually eat a whole meal with just chopsticks and drink miso soup straight from the bowl. Japanese chopsticks often have thin, pointed tips, which some say is good for picking bones out of fish.

August 4th is Chopsticks Day in Japan, because 8 and 4 can be read as ha-shi. Some shrines hold ceremonies to thank old chopsticks.

The word itadakimasu comes from a verb meaning to hold something up above your head. Many people explain it as thanks to the food and the people who made it.

Q&A in English

Isn't slurping rude?

Not for noodles in Japan. Slurping is normal for ramen and soba, and some say it helps you taste the flavor. But eating quietly is fine too.

Why can't I stick my chopsticks in the rice?

Because it looks like the bowl of rice offered to the dead at a funeral. It's seen as bad luck at a normal meal.

Where do I pay?

It depends. At many places, you take the check to the register near the door. At some, you buy a meal ticket from a machine before you eat.
