HOW TO

What to do in an earthquake in Japan

Step by step

When you feel shaking or your phone sounds an earthquake alert, protect yourself first.

Drop, Cover, Hold On. Get down low, cover your head, and hold on under a table until the shaking stops.

Stay away from windows, shelves, and anything that could fall on you.

Don't run outside while it's still shaking.

Once the shaking stops, turn off the stove or any fire calmly.

Open a door or window so you have a way out.

If you go outside, stay away from concrete block walls, vending machines, and buildings.

If there's a tsunami warning, go to high ground right away.

If you're in an elevator, press all the floor buttons and get off at the first floor where it stops.

Check the news, the radio, disaster apps, or local announcements for correct information.

Background

英語では「Safety first, fire second.」

Did you know?

Earthquake early warnings for the public started in October 2007. They work because data travels faster than the shaking itself.

Japan's shindo scale shows how strongly a place shakes, in ten levels from 0 to 7. It's different from magnitude, which shows the size of the earthquake itself.

Many home gas meters shut off by themselves in strong shaking. You can usually turn the gas back on yourself with a reset button on the meter.

After a big disaster, you can leave and hear voice messages by calling 171. Phone companies also run disaster message boards for smartphones.

Etiquette

Don't rush outside during the shaking.
Don't use elevators to evacuate.
Never go to the shore to watch a tsunami.
Don't share rumors on social media.
Try not to evacuate by car unless you have to.

Q&A in English

Why did everyone's phone go off at once?

That's an earthquake early warning. It's sent to phones in the area when strong shaking is expected, sometimes a few seconds before it arrives.

Should I run outside?

Not during the shaking. Things like glass and roof tiles can fall. Protect your head where you are, and move only after it stops.

What does a tsunami warning mean?

It means a dangerous tsunami may hit the coast. If you're near the sea, go to high ground or a tall, strong building right away, and don't go back until the warning is lifted.

How do I know where to go?

Look for evacuation signs on the street, or check your city's website or disaster app. Many signs have pictures and English.
