Shihan is a title for a senior instructor, often the head teacher of a dojo. The word combines "teacher" and "model," so it means a teacher others should follow. You'll hear it in karate, aikido and many other arts. There's no single national standard, though. Each school or organization decides who can be called shihan.

If you train at a dojo in Japan, you'll probably hear students call the head teacher shihan. The word is written with two characters, one meaning teacher and one meaning model or example, so a shihan is a teacher whose skill and attitude others should follow. It's a title of respect, and it carries more weight than sensei, which can be used for any teacher, a doctor or even a writer.

What surprises many people is that there's no single standard for who can be called shihan. Each martial art, school or organization has its own rules. In some, the title is tied to a high dan rank or a teaching license, and in others, it simply means the person in charge of the dojo.

Kendo, for example, uses its own set of teaching titles instead. There's also the word shihandai, which means an assistant who teaches in the shihan's place. To me, the title says less about how strong someone is and more about how much responsibility they carry for their students.

Q

Should I call my karate teacher shihan or sensei?

Follow what the other students do. In many dojos, sensei is fine for any teacher, and shihan is used only for the head instructor. If you're not sure, ask a senior student.

Q

Is shihan higher than a black belt?

They measure different things. A black belt shows your rank, while shihan is a teaching title. Many shihan hold high dan ranks, but the requirements depend on the organization.
