Rikuruto sutsu, or "recruit suit," is a Japanese-made English word for the suit students wear while job hunting. It's usually black, worn with a white shirt and plain shoes, and it's meant to look neat rather than stylish. Because most students start job hunting at the same time, company information sessions can look like a sea of identical black suits.

If you walk through a Tokyo business district in spring, you may see groups of young people in almost identical black suits. They're university students looking for their first job, and their outfit is called a rikuruto sutsu, from the English words "recruit" and "suit."
In English, though, "recruit suit" doesn't mean anything, so it's better to say "a job-hunting suit." The rules are not written anywhere, but most students follow the same pattern: a plain black or dark suit, a white shirt, neat hair, and simple shoes and bag. Many buy their first suit for this, often as a set from a store that sells everything needed.
The reason is that many Japanese companies hire new graduates all at once, so students go through interviews at the same time and don't want to stand out in the wrong way. Some people think this is too uniform, and in recent years more companies have told applicants they can come in casual clothes. Still, many students choose the suit anyway, because it feels like the safe choice.
Why is it always black?
Nobody officially decided it. Black became the most common choice because it looks neat, works for any company, and doesn't stand out. It's often said that navy and gray used to be more common.
What happens if I wear a different color?
Usually nothing bad. A dark navy or gray suit is fine almost everywhere. Students just worry about it because everyone around them is in black.
Do people keep wearing it after they get a job?
Some do for a while, but many buy suits with more color or style once they start working. A plain black suit can also be used for funerals, though a proper mourning suit is a deeper black.

FACTMost companies don't set any color rule, and some even ask for casual clothes. The black suit is a habit that students share, not a company requirement.
