A bokuto is a wooden sword shaped like a Japanese sword, usually made of oak. In kendo, people normally hit each other with bamboo swords, but they use bokuto to practice set forms, called kata, without hitting. Bokuto are also a classic souvenir at tourist spots. They are solid and heavy, so they're treated as dangerous objects and can't be carried onto a plane.

A bokuto is a wooden sword with the same shape as a Japanese sword. Many people outside Japan call it a bokken. It's usually made of a hard wood like oak, and it feels surprisingly heavy in your hand. In kendo matches, players hit each other with bamboo swords while wearing armor, but they also practice kata, which are set patterns of moves done in pairs.

For kata, they use bokuto instead, and they stop just before the sword touches the other person. A wooden sword can cause serious injury, so control and respect are very important. Interestingly, many Japanese people connect bokuto with school trips.

For a long time, buying a wooden sword at a tourist spot was a classic thing for teenage boys to do, even though most of them never used it. If you buy one as a souvenir, remember that you can't carry it onto a plane. You'll need to pack it in your checked baggage. I still have one at home from my own school trip.

Q

Is a bokuto safer than a real sword?

It won't cut you, but it can still break bones. That's why kendo kata are done slowly and carefully at first, and the sword stops just before it touches the other person.

Q

Can I take one home on the plane?

Not in your carry-on. Wooden swords aren't allowed in the cabin, but you can usually put one in your checked baggage if it's packed properly. It's best to check with your airline.

Q

Why do so many students buy them on school trips?

It's a bit of a running joke in Japan. Teenage boys see them in souvenir shops, think they look cool, and buy one. Then the sword sits in a closet at home for years.
