In international judo, one fighter wears white and the other wears blue. The International Judo Federation decided on this in 1997 so that referees and spectators could tell the two fighters apart more easily. Japan, where judo began, opposed the change and wanted to keep white for everyone. Blue first appeared at the Olympics at the 2000 Sydney Games.

If you watch judo at the Olympics, you'll see one fighter in white and the other in blue. Many Japanese people still feel that a judogi, or judo uniform, should be white, and for most of judo's history it was. Judo was founded in Japan in 1882, and for more than a hundred years both fighters wore white.
The idea of a colored uniform was raised in the 1980s, and the International Judo Federation finally approved it in 1997. The main reason was to make matches easier to follow, especially for referees and TV audiences, who need to see clearly who threw whom. Japan opposed the change, saying that white was part of judo's tradition.
Blue first appeared at the Olympics in Sydney in 2000, and today it's normal at major international events. In 2011, the rules were changed so that the fighter called first wears white. For me, the blue judogi shows how a Japanese martial art became a world sport, and how that meant accepting changes Japan didn't choose.
