Amae describes leaning on someone who is close to you and trusting that they will accept it. A child does it with a parent, and adults do it with partners, close friends and sometimes bosses. English has no single word for it, and the nearest translations, like dependence or spoiled, sound negative. In Japanese it is neutral, and being able to let someone amae is considered a strength.
甘えとは、親しい相手に寄りかかり、その人が受け入れてくれると信じることです。子どもは親に甘え、大人も恋人や親友、ときに上司に甘えます。英語に一語の訳はなく、dependence や spoiled といった近い語はどれも否定的に響きます。日本語では中立で、人に甘えさせてあげられることは長所とされます。

Amae is a Japanese word that became famous because it is hard to translate. It means allowing yourself to depend on someone close, and trusting that they will accept it without resenting you.
A small child climbing into a parent's lap is the clearest example, but adults do it too. Asking a close friend for a favor you could not ask a stranger for is amae. In English the closest words are dependence or being spoiled, and both sound like criticism.
In Japanese it is neutral, and a relationship where neither person can amae is considered cold rather than admirable. A psychiatrist named Takeo Doi argued in 1971 that this idea sits at the center of Japanese relationships. His book is still debated, but the word itself has entered several languages.

QIsn't depending on people a weakness?
人に頼るのは弱さではありませんか。
Not in this frame. Amae assumes a relationship strong enough to carry it. The judgment falls on whether the relationship can hold the weight, not on the person leaning.
この考え方では違います。甘えは、それを支えられる関係があることを前提にしています。評価されるのは寄りかかる人ではなく、その関係が重みに耐えられるかどうかです。
QWhen does amae become a problem?
甘えが問題になるのはどんなときですか。
When it is one-sided or used with people who have not agreed to it. Japanese has a matching criticism, amae ga aru, meaning someone is leaning on others instead of doing their own job.
一方的なとき、あるいは受け入れていない相手に向けたときです。日本語には対になる批判もあり、「甘えがある」は、自分の務めを果たさず他人に寄りかかっていることを指します。
QIs this really unique to Japan?
これは本当に日本だけのものですか。
The behavior is universal; the vocabulary is not. Every culture has people who lean on those close to them. What Japanese has is a neutral noun for it, which makes the behavior easier to discuss without blame.
