Emma's last week went very fast. She wanted to do everything one more time. She ate lunch with Mio on the roof. She went out on Mio's father's boat. She even ate natto again. "Now I like it," she said, but her face said something different.
Every night, Mio stayed up late in her room. "What are you doing?" Emma asked. "It's a secret," said Mio. Emma laughed. "Another secret!"
On Sunday morning, Saki and many classmates came to the station to say goodbye. Then the family drove two hours to the airport. Emma's bag was heavy with presents. Kota gave her his favorite hockey card. "For your grandpa," he said.
At the airport, Emma hugged everyone. She hugged Kota, and she hugged Mio's mother and father for a long time. "Thank you for being my Japanese family," she said.
Then she turned to Mio. Mio held out a thick sketchbook. "This was my secret," she said.
Emma opened it. Inside were drawings of all their days together. Emma at the station, waving both hands. Emma doing the crab dance. The two of them on the roof. Fireworks over the sea. The birthday party. The sleeping dragon on the night of the typhoon. The clean beach. The speech contest. On the last page, two girls were sitting on the sea wall, one with red hair and one with black hair. Above them, a maple leaf was flying in the wind over the waves.
Emma turned the pages slowly. Tears fell on the paper. "Mio," she said, "this is the best present of my whole life."
Then Emma took the little red maple leaf pin off her jacket. She put it on Mio's coat. "So you will remember," she said. "You are not a shadow. You never were."
It was time to go. Emma walked to the gate. Then she turned around and waved both hands, just like on her first day at the station.
Mio wanted to say something, but she was afraid her voice would break. Then she took a deep breath. "See you, my sister!" she shouted. It was very loud. People in the airport turned and looked at her. The shy girl from Umino did not care at all.
Winter came to Umino, and life went on. But Mio was different now. She talked more at school. She joined the art club and showed her drawings to everyone. Every day, she wore the maple leaf pin.
In March, a big envelope came from Canada. Inside, there was a photo of Emma with Maple, and a letter. "My grandpa is much better," Emma wrote. "He looks at your sketchbook every day. And Mio, my family has a question. Will you come to visit us this summer?"
At the bottom of the letter, there was a drawing. It was a girl with black hair and a blue hair clip. It was very, very bad. Next to it, Emma wrote, "This is you. I am not an artist. Sorry!"
Mio laughed until her stomach hurt. Then she looked out at the sea. Far away, on the other side of all that water, her sister was waiting.
"Yes," Mio said out loud. "I'll come."
