On Sunday morning, the sky was a strange yellow color. The wind was getting stronger, and the sea was gray and angry. Mio's father went to the harbor early to tie up his boat. Mio and Emma helped her mother. They put tape on the windows and brought the flower pots inside.
"In Vancouver, we have rain and snow," Emma said. "But we don't have typhoons. Is it really dangerous?"
"If we stay inside, we'll be fine," said Mio. "We have typhoons every year. Don't worry."
Emma tried to smile, but her hands were shaking.
By the afternoon, the rain was hitting the house like small stones. The trees in the garden were bending in the wind. Mio's father came home wet from head to toe. "The boat is safe," he said. Then, at seven o'clock, all the lights went out.
Kota screamed. Emma screamed louder. Mio's mother laughed and found some candles. "This happens every time," she said.
The family sat together in the living room. Outside, the wind was howling like a giant animal. Emma sat with her arms around her knees and did not say a word. The cheerful girl was quiet for the first time.
Mio looked at her. Then she did something new. She began to talk.
She told Emma about the typhoon when she was six. A tree fell on their house, and her father carried her on his back through the dark. Then she told an old Umino story. "A dragon god lives under our sea," she said. "When he is angry, he makes typhoons. But in the morning, he always goes back to sleep."
Mio took out her sketchbook and drew by candlelight. She drew a funny dragon with a big round nose, sleeping on the waves. Kota laughed. Then Emma laughed too, just a small laugh.
Later, Kota and the parents fell asleep. The two girls were still awake.
"Mio," Emma said, "tonight, you are the brave one."
"Me? I'm never brave," said Mio. "At school, I can't even say hello first. I want to be an illustrator someday, but I can't show my pictures to anyone. I'm too scared."
"You showed them to me," said Emma. "And you know what? In Canada, I was often alone. I smile all the time because I'm scared too. When I smile, nobody can see it."
Mio was surprised. "Even you?" "Even me."
They sat together and listened to the storm. Slowly, the wind became softer.
In the morning, the sky was blue and clear. But the beach was not clean at all. It was covered with broken wood, plastic bottles, and seaweed. Their favorite place by the sea looked sad and ugly.
Emma looked at the beach for a long time. Then she turned to Mio. Her eyes were shining. "Mio, I have an idea," she said. "But I need your help. And you will have to be brave again."
