Mio lived in Umino, a small town by the sea. She was sixteen, and she was a quiet girl. At school, she did not talk much. But she always had her sketchbook with her. She loved to draw the sea.
One evening, her mother said, "Mio, I have big news. A girl from Canada is coming to our house. She is an exchange student. She will live with us for six months."
"Six months?" said Mio. "But I can't speak English!"
"You study English at school," said her father. He was a fisherman, and he always smiled.
"That's different," said Mio. Her little brother Kota jumped up and down. "A girl from Canada! Can she play hockey?"
On Saturday, the family went to the station. A tall girl got off the train. She had long red hair and green eyes. She saw the family and waved both hands.
"Hi! I'm Emma! Are you Mio?" she said. Then she hugged Mio. Mio did not move. Her face was very red.
"H-hello," Mio said. That was all.
Emma talked all the way home. She talked about Vancouver, her family, and her big dog, Maple. She talked about the plane and the trains. Mio only listened. "She is like the sun," Mio thought. "And I am like a little shadow."
At dinner, Mio's mother made fish, rice, and miso soup. Then Kota brought some natto. "Try it!" he said. Emma put the natto in her mouth. Her eyes got very big. "It's... very... interesting!" she said.
Everyone laughed. Kota laughed, and Father laughed. Even Mio laughed. Emma laughed most of all.
That night, Mio could not sleep. She went to the kitchen to get some water. The door to the veranda was open. The moon was shining on the sea.
Emma was sitting there alone. She had a photo in her hand. Her shoulders were shaking.
The happy girl from Canada was crying.
