On the morning of the contest, Emma was cheerful again. Mio wanted to ask about the phone call, but she could not. "Good luck today!" Emma said. "Today is your day."
The contest was in a big hall in the city. There were fifteen students from many schools and about three hundred people. Mio was number twelve. Her hands were as cold as ice. Emma, Mio's family, Saki, and Mr. Mori were sitting in the third row.
One by one, the students gave their speeches. A boy talked about robots. A girl talked about soccer. They all spoke very well. Mio's legs were shaking under her skirt.
"Number twelve, Mio Tanaka." Mio walked to the center of the stage. The lights were very bright. She opened her mouth, but nothing came out. Her mind went blank. She forgot her first line. The hall was silent. Somebody coughed.
Mio looked at the third row. Emma put her hand on her chest and took a big, slow breath, just like on the sea wall. Then she smiled her big sunny smile.
Mio took a deep breath too. She put her paper down. She did not need it.
"My speech is called 'My Sister from Across the Sea,'" she said.
"Last summer, a girl came to my town from Canada. She had red hair and a very loud voice. On her first day, she told our class she was a crab." People laughed. "Before she came, I was like a shadow. I was too shy to speak. I was too shy to show my drawings to anyone."
"But she taught me something. Brave people are not people with no fear. Brave people are scared, but they smile, and they try anyway. After the typhoon, she asked me to be brave. Because of her, many people came to clean our beach."
"Now I know that the sun and a shadow can be friends. Emma, thank you. You are my sister."
For a moment, the hall was quiet. Then everyone started to clap. Mio saw Emma crying and laughing at the same time. Kota was standing on his chair and clapping hard.
Mio did not win first prize. But she won a special prize for "the speech that touched everyone's heart." Mr. Mori shook her hand. "I'm so proud of you," he said.
On the train home, Emma was quiet. Then she said, "Mio, I have to tell you something. Last night, my mom called. My grandfather is sick. It's not very serious, but he wants to see me. So I'm going home early. My flight is next Sunday."
Mio looked out of the window at the dark sea. The prize was in her hands, but suddenly it felt very heavy. "Next Sunday," she said softly. "That's only seven days away."
