Emma's idea was simple, but it was big. "Let's clean the beach," she said. "Not just you and me. The whole school. The whole town!"
"How?" asked Mio. "With your posters!" said Emma.
Mio's heart began to beat fast. Then she remembered the night of the typhoon, and Emma's words. "Okay," she said. "I'll try."
That night, Mio drew a new poster. On one side, the beach was dirty and sad. On the other side, it was clean, and children were playing in the waves. Emma wrote the words in English, and Mio wrote them in Japanese. The next day, they took the poster to Mr. Mori.
"This is wonderful," he said. Saki helped them make copies. The whole class put up the posters in shops, at the station, and at the fish market.
On Saturday morning, Mio was worried. "What if nobody comes?" she said. But at nine o'clock, the beach was full of people. There were students, children, shop owners, and old fishermen. Mio's father came with his friends from the harbor and a big truck.
They worked all morning. Emma talked to everyone in English and in her funny Japanese. Mio carried bags of trash, and she talked to classmates she never talked to before. "Your poster was really cool," said a boy from her class. Mio smiled. "Thank you," she said. It was not so difficult.
By lunchtime, the beach was clean again. An old woman gave everyone rice balls. Emma sat on the sand and said, "This is my best day in Japan!" "You say that every day," said Mio. "Because it's true every day!" Emma said.
On Monday, Mr. Mori asked Mio to come to the teachers' room. "Mio," he said, "there is an English speech contest in the city in December. I want you to enter it."
"Me? I can't," said Mio. "I can't speak in front of people."
"Your poster spoke to the whole town," said Mr. Mori. "Now your voice can do it too. Please think about it."
That evening, Mio told Emma. Emma jumped up. "Do it, Mio! I'll help you practice every day!" And she did. Every evening, the two girls sat on the sea wall. Mio read her speech to the waves, and Emma listened. "Take a deep breath," Emma said. "Like this." She put her hand on her chest and breathed in slowly.
But Mio never let Emma read her speech. "What is it about?" Emma asked. "It's a secret," said Mio. Emma laughed. "Now you have a secret from me!"
The night before the contest, Mio was practicing in her room when she heard Emma's voice. Emma was talking on the phone in the next room, speaking English very quietly.
"Next week? So soon?" Emma said. "But I promised... Okay, Mom. I understand."
Then it was quiet. After a while, Mio heard Emma crying softly. Mio stood still in the dark hall. "Next week?" she thought. "What is happening next week?"
