The next morning, Emma came down to breakfast with a big smile. "Good morning, everyone!" she said. Mio looked at her eyes. They were not red. "Was it a dream?" Mio thought.
At school, Emma wore the same blue uniform as Mio, with a little red maple leaf pin. In class, Mr. Mori, the English teacher, said, "This is Emma. She is from Canada. Emma, please say hello in Japanese."
Emma stood up. She wanted to say, "I am from Canada." In Japanese, Canada is "Kanada." But Emma said, "Watashi wa kani desu!"
The class was quiet for one second. Then everyone laughed. "Kani" means "crab" in Japanese. Emma said, "I am a crab!"
Mio's face got hot. She wanted to hide. But Emma laughed too. She moved her hands like a crab. "Snip, snip!" she said. The class laughed again. Now it was a happy laugh.
"How can she do that?" Mio thought. "I can never do that."
At lunch, a popular girl named Saki asked Emma to eat with her. Emma said, "Thank you! Maybe tomorrow. Today I want to eat with my sister." She took Mio's hand, and they went up to the roof.
The sea was blue and bright. Emma saw Mio's sketchbook. "Can I see?" she asked. Mio was shy, but she opened it. There were pictures of boats, birds, and the sea.
"Mio! You are an artist!" said Emma. "These are beautiful!"
Mio did not know what to say. Then, in a small voice, she asked, "Emma... last night... were you crying?"
Emma stopped smiling. "You saw me," she said. "I miss my mom. And I miss Maple. I smile a lot, but sometimes I am scared too."
Mio took out her pencil. She looked at the photo of Maple on Emma's phone, and she drew the dog. It was a big, happy dog with a long tongue.
Emma looked at the picture for a long time. "Thank you," she said softly. "Now Maple is here with me."
After lunch, Mr. Mori said, "The Umino Summer Festival is in two weeks. Who can draw a poster for our class?"
Nobody said anything. Then Emma stood up. "Mio can! Mio is a great artist!"
Everyone turned and looked at Mio.
