Mio wanted to say no. But Emma looked so happy. "Okay," Mio said very quietly.
For two weeks, Mio drew after school. She drew the sea at night and a big red and gold firework over it. She drew the shrine, the food stalls, and people in yukata. Emma watched her every day. "Wow," she said again and again.
The poster went up at the station. People stopped and looked at it. "Who drew this?" an old man asked. "My sister!" said Emma. Mio hid behind her.
On the night of the festival, Mio's mother helped the girls put on yukata. Mio's yukata was navy blue with white flowers. Emma's was pink with goldfish. "I look like a real Japanese girl!" said Emma. "With red hair," said Kota.
The festival was full of lights and music. The girls ate takoyaki and shaved ice. Emma's tongue turned blue. Then they tried goldfish scooping. Emma's paper scoop tore three times. Mio caught a small red fish on her first try. "Teach me, sensei!" said Emma.
At eight o'clock, they sat on the beach. The first firework opened in the sky. Boom! Red, gold, and green lights fell into the sea. Emma held Mio's arm. "It's so beautiful," she said.
Mio looked at Emma's happy face. "Maybe I am not a shadow," she thought. "Maybe I can shine a little too."
Later, Mio went to buy some drinks. When she came back, she saw Emma and Saki behind a food stall. They were talking quietly. Mio stopped.
"Don't tell Mio," Emma said. "It's a secret. She can't know."
"Okay," said Saki. "Next Friday, then."
Mio's heart went cold. She stood there with the two drinks in her hands. The fireworks were still loud, but she could not hear them.
"A secret?" she thought. "A secret from me?"
