After the festival, Mio did not talk to Emma much. Emma said, "Good morning!" Mio said, "Morning," and looked away.
At school, Emma often talked with Saki. They talked quietly and laughed. When Mio came near, they stopped. "Emma has a new friend now," Mio thought. "A better friend."
One night, Emma knocked on Mio's door. "Mio, are you angry with me?" "No," said Mio. "I'm busy." Emma waited for a minute. Then she walked away slowly.
Kota saw everything. "Why are you so cold to Emma?" he asked. "She likes you so much." "You don't understand," Mio said.
Friday came. It was Mio's seventeenth birthday. But nobody said "Happy birthday" in the morning. Not her mother, not her father, and not Kota. Not Emma. Mio walked to school alone.
After school, Mio did not go home. She sat on the sea wall and looked at the waves. She opened her sketchbook, but she could not draw.
"Mio! There you are!" Emma ran to her. She was out of breath. "Come with me! Quick!" "Why?" "Just come!"
Emma pulled her back to school, all the way to their classroom. Then she opened the door.
"Happy birthday, Mio!"
The whole class was there. Saki and Mr. Mori were there, and Mio's family too. There was a big cake on the desk. On the wall, there were copies of Mio's drawings of the sea, and around them were messages from everyone.
"This was the secret," said Emma. "Saki and I planned it for two weeks. I'm sorry I couldn't tell you."
Mio started to cry. "I'm sorry, Emma. I thought... I thought you didn't like me."
Emma hugged her. "Silly Mio! You are my Japanese sister. Sisters fight sometimes. But they always make up."
That evening, the family ate more cake at home. Then the news came on TV. "A big typhoon is coming," the man said. "It will hit the coast on Sunday."
Mio's father looked out at the dark sea. "This one is going to be big," he said quietly.
Emma's face went white. "A typhoon?" she asked. "What do we do?"
