Moss is one of the clearest places where Japanese and Western garden sense diverge. In much of Europe and North America, moss on a path or a wall is a sign of neglect and is scrubbed off. In Japan it is cultivated.
Temple gardens are planted with it, gardeners weed carefully around it by hand, and a garden's age is read partly from how thoroughly the stone has been colonized. The national anthem has a line about small stones growing into a boulder covered in moss, using it as an image of immense stretches of time.
The climate helps: Japan is humid and forested, and the number of moss species here is high. There is a practical warning attached. Moss gardens are extremely easy to damage, a single footstep leaves a mark that takes months to recover, and the famous moss temple in Kyoto restricts visitor numbers and requires advance application for exactly this reason.
苔は、日本と西洋の庭の感覚が最もはっきり分かれる場所のひとつです。ヨーロッパや北米の多くでは、小道や壁の苔は手入れの不足のしるしであり、こすり落とされます。日本ではそれを育てます。

No. Stepping on moss crushes it and the scar stays for months. Gardens provide stepping stones and paths for this reason, and staff will stop you if you step off them, politely but immediately.
