Grieg was born in 1843 in the Norwegian port city of Bergen. His first music teacher was his mother, a fine pianist. His great-grandfather was a merchant who had moved to Norway from Scotland, and the family name was originally spelled Greig. At fifteen, on the advice of the famous Norwegian violinist Ole Bull, he went to study at the Leipzig Conservatory in Germany.
While studying, he suffered a serious lung illness that damaged one of his lungs, but he kept going and graduated. He then worked in Copenhagen and elsewhere, and began writing fresh music inspired by Norwegian folk songs and dance rhythms. His Piano Concerto in A minor, written in 1868, was a great success. Another masterpiece is his music for Henrik Ibsen's play Peer Gynt, first performed in 1876.
In 1867 he married his cousin Nina Hagerup, a singer who became the finest performer of his songs. But their only child, a daughter named Alexandra, died in 1869 when she was just over a year old. Throughout his life Grieg wrote ten books of short piano pieces, 66 in all, called Lyric Pieces. In them he captured everyday feelings and the landscapes of his homeland, almost like a musical diary.
In 1885 he built a home called Troldhaugen beside a lake near Bergen, and he composed in a small hut in the garden. Though his health was never strong, he kept giving concerts around Europe. He died in Bergen on 4 September 1907, aged 64, and his ashes were placed in a tomb carved into a cliff overlooking the lake at Troldhaugen. He is still loved as Norway's leading composer.
Grieg was born in Bergen, Norway, in 1843. His mother was his first piano teacher. He studied music in Germany. He loved the folk music of Norway. He wrote Morning Mood and In the Hall of the Mountain King. He was not very tall.

There is a well-known story that Grieg always carried a small frog figurine in his pocket as a good-luck charm, and that he would stroke it before walking on stage. It was a sweet habit for a man who got nervous before concerts.
Grieg, a giant of music, is said to have been only about 152 centimeters tall. A statue of him at Troldhaugen is reportedly life-size. From that small body came music as grand as Norway's fjords.
In 1870, Grieg visited the great pianist Franz Liszt in Rome and showed him the score of his Piano Concerto in A minor. Liszt played it straight through at sight, praising it and encouraging the young composer. It was a moment that gave Grieg confidence for the rest of his life.
In the Hall of the Mountain King is now heard everywhere, from ads to films. Yet while writing it, Grieg told a friend in a letter that he could hardly bear to listen to it, calling it over-the-top Norwegian. Sometimes a piece becomes beloved no matter what its composer thought.
In 1899, Grieg turned down an invitation to perform in Paris in protest against the Dreyfus affair, in which a Jewish French army officer had been wrongly convicted. Some people in France turned against him for a time. He was a man who spoke out for what he believed was right.
In 1903 Grieg recorded some of his own piano playing in Paris, and in his last years he also made piano rolls for player pianos. The sound is old and scratchy, but more than a hundred years later we can still hear the composer himself at the keyboard.
