Morning Mood is part of the music the Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg wrote for Henrik Ibsen's play Peer Gynt. A flute and an oboe take turns playing a peaceful melody, and then the whole orchestra blossoms like the rising sun. It is loved all over the world as music for the morning.
Peer Gynt is the story of Peer, a young dreamer and liar who wanders the world. In 1874, Ibsen asked Grieg to write music for the play. Morning Mood is the prelude to Act 4, when Peer greets the dawn on the coast of Morocco in North Africa. So it is not a Norwegian sunrise at all, but a morning in a faraway land.
The play opened in 1876 in Christiania, today's Oslo. Later, Grieg chose favorite numbers from the music and made two concert suites. Morning Mood is the first piece of Suite No. 1, arranged in a different order from the play. In this way, the music began to be played around the world on its own.
This music is about the morning. The sun comes up slowly. A flute and an oboe play a happy tune. Many people think it shows Norway. But in the story, the morning is in Africa!

Ibsen wrote Peer Gynt in 1867 as a verse drama to be read, not performed on stage. Seven years later, it was decided to stage it, and Ibsen asked Grieg for music. That is how this famous piece was born.
Grieg's music for the play has more than twenty numbers, including songs, choruses, and short scene music. He chose four pieces each for Suite No. 1 and Suite No. 2 for orchestra. What we usually hear are the 'best of the best'.
Grieg's music became so famous that, in the 20th century, some felt it made the play too romantic, and new music was tried. In the 1940s, the Norwegian composer Harald Sæverud wrote a new score. Still, around the world, Grieg's music is what people think of first.
After wandering the world, Peer returns home as an old man and finds Solveig, the woman who waited for him all her life. 'Solveig's Song', which she sings, is as famous as Morning Mood among Grieg's works.
