Butterfly is the first piece in Book 3 (Op. 43) of Lyric Pieces, a collection of piano music by the Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg. Quick little notes in the right hand rise and fall, like the fluttering wings of a butterfly. The piece lasts only about two minutes, but it is full of light, sparkling beauty.
Lyric Pieces is a set of short piano works that Grieg kept writing for more than 30 years, from 1867 to 1901. It has ten books and 66 pieces in all. More and more people were playing the piano at home in those days, and these short, friendly pieces sold well. Book 3 was published in 1886, and it contains six pieces about nature and feelings, including Butterfly, Solitary Traveller, Little Bird and To Spring.
Butterfly is also popular with piano students, because it is good practice for quick fingers. Its floating, drifting lines use many half steps, the closest notes on the keyboard, and they seem to show how a butterfly flits about with no fixed path. Along with To Spring from the same book, it is one of Grieg's best-loved piano pieces.
This is a short piano piece. The notes go up and down very quickly. They sound like a butterfly in the air. Grieg was from Norway. He wrote 66 short piano pieces like this one!

Grieg published Book 1 of Lyric Pieces in 1867, when he was about 24, and the last, Book 10, appeared in 1901, when he was about 58. These 66 pieces written over more than 30 years are sometimes called Grieg's musical diary, and you can feel how his heart changed from youth to old age.
In late 19th-century Europe, more and more families had a piano at home. Lyric Pieces sold well as short, friendly music that these amateur players could manage. It is said to have become an important source of income for Grieg.
The fluttering sound comes from quick little runs that use many half steps, the closest notes on the piano, such as a white key and the black key next to it. The notes slide smoothly up and down, so it sounds like a butterfly floating on the breeze.
There is a story that Grieg, who was a small man, kept a little frog figure in his pocket and rubbed it for luck before concerts. It is not certain how true it is, but it is a well-known, charming story about the composer whom Norwegians love.
