Norwegian Dances is a set of four pieces for piano duet (two players at one piano). Grieg composed it in 1880 and published it the next year. No. 2 is the most famous of the four. Its calm, slightly playful opening melody is hard to forget once you hear it. Today it is also often played in an orchestral version.
The melodies of the four dances come from a folk song collection by the Norwegian musician Ludvig Lindeman. Lindeman wrote down songs and dance tunes that people in places like mountain villages had passed down. Grieg gave these simple melodies colorful harmonies and changing rhythms, and turned them into pieces that shine in concerts.
No. 2 starts calmly, then suddenly changes into a fast, lively dance, and finally returns to the calm first melody. Later, Hans Sitt, a musician who worked in Leipzig, arranged it for orchestra, and this version spread around the world. In the orchestral version, the opening melody played by the oboe is especially well loved.
This is a dance by Grieg. At first, it was for two people at one piano. The melody comes from an old Norwegian folk song. It starts slowly and sweetly. Then it suddenly becomes very fast!

The orchestral version that is often played was arranged not by Grieg but by the musician Hans Sitt. So the most famous form of the piece was made by someone other than the composer. Strangely, Grieg himself wrote wonderful orchestral music, such as Peer Gynt.
Ludvig Lindeman, who made the folk song collection, was also a church organist. He wrote down a great many folk songs, and Grieg borrowed melodies from his collection for other works, too. Part of Grieg's 'Norwegian sound' was supported by Lindeman's patient work.
In the 1800s, playing piano duets at home with family and friends was very popular. Even symphonies and other orchestral works were arranged for four hands so people could enjoy them. Grieg probably wrote Norwegian Dances as a duet because so many people wanted to play music at home in those days.
Hans Sitt, who made the orchestral version, was a violinist born in Prague who taught at the Leipzig Conservatory in Germany. His violin studies are still used by students around the world. If you study the violin, you may have seen his name in your sheet music.
