The Story

Notturno is the fourth piece in Book 5 (Op. 54) of Grieg's Lyric Pieces for piano. A nocturne, or notturno, is a piece that paints the quiet and feelings of the night. It begins with a gentle, singing melody, and in the middle you hear trills, quick wavering notes that sound like birds singing. It is a calm piece that brings to mind a quiet Nordic night, when summer nights never grow fully dark.

Book 5 was written in 1891. It has six pieces: Shepherd's Boy, Norwegian Rustic March, March of the Dwarfs, Notturno, Scherzo and Bell Ringing. At that time, Grieg lived at Troldhaugen, the house he had built near the Norwegian city of Bergen. It stands in beautiful natural surroundings by the water of a fjord inlet.

Later, Grieg made an orchestral Lyric Suite from four pieces in Book 5. Before that, the conductor Anton Seidl had arranged four pieces, including Notturno. Grieg reworked Seidl's arrangements, dropped Bell Ringing, and added his own arrangement of Shepherd's Boy. In Notturno, the soft colors of the strings and woodwinds make the night air feel even wider and deeper.

This is a quiet piano piece about the night. The melody is soft and sweet. In the middle, you can hear sounds like little birds. In Norway, summer nights are not very dark. It is a calm and beautiful night.

In Bergen, Norway, where Grieg lived, the sky does not get fully dark around midsummer; it stays softly light even at night. People sometimes say that the quiet, clear sound of this Notturno captures the air of a Nordic summer night.

In the middle of the piece, trills, rapidly trembling notes, appear again and again. They sound like little birds singing in a forest at night. Grieg, who loved nature, seems to use the piano to show the presence of living things in the quiet night.

The last piece in the same Book 5, Bell Ringing, paints the sound of bells by stacking fifths, pairs of notes like C and G. It sounded very new at the time, and some say it seems to look ahead to the Impressionist music of Debussy and others.

For the Lyric Suite, the conductor Anton Seidl, who worked in America, first arranged four pieces for orchestra, and Grieg later reworked them. Grieg dropped Seidl's Bell Ringing and added his own arrangement of Shepherd's Boy. Comparing the piano and orchestral versions is part of the fun.
