To Spring is the last piece in Book 3 of Lyric Pieces (Op. 43), published in 1886 by the Norwegian composer Grieg. The title means 'To Spring', as if the music were speaking to spring. In Norway, winter is long and the days are dark. That is why the arrival of spring brings such great joy. Its bright melody seems full of longing for spring.
The piece is in F-sharp major, a key with six sharps. Over soft chords in the left hand, the right hand sings a bright melody. After a slightly restless middle part, the melody returns with rich, full chords, like spring light pouring out all at once. Book 3 has many pieces about nature, such as Butterfly and Little Bird, and To Spring closes the book.
To Spring is one of the most popular of all the Lyric Pieces. Grieg was also active as a pianist, and in 1903 in Paris he recorded this piece himself. The recording is more than 100 years old and quite noisy, but we can still hear how the composer himself painted spring at the piano.
This is a piano piece by Grieg. It is about spring in Norway. Winter there is long and dark. So spring is a very happy time. Grieg recorded this piece himself in 1903!

In 1903, at a record company in Paris, Grieg recorded several of his piano pieces, and To Spring was one of them. Records at that time could hold only about three minutes per side, so short pieces were chosen. It is a very valuable record of how the composer played his own music.
This piece is in F-sharp major, a key with six sharps. The score may look difficult, but on the piano it uses many black keys, which can actually feel natural under the hand. Its sparkling, bright sound fits the spring light after the snow melts.
Book 3, which includes To Spring, has pieces about nature and living things, such as Butterfly and Little Bird. A fluttering butterfly, a singing bird, and finally spring itself. The whole book is like a small photo album of Norwegian nature.
In Norway, winter days are short, and in the far north the sun hardly rises at all for a while. That is why the coming of spring brings people great joy. Another Norwegian composer, Christian Sinding, wrote a piano piece called Rustle of Spring, which is also loved around the world.
