Grieg wrote this music for Ibsen's play Peer Gynt. In Suite No. 1, it comes right after the bright 'Morning Mood.' It is the music for the scene in which Peer's mother, Åse, dies. Played slowly and quietly by strings alone, the sorrow grows little by little and then fades away again.
Åse often struggled with her son, who told tall tales and ran off on adventures, but she loved him deeply. In the play, Peer comes home and sits by his dying mother's bed. He tells her one more story, pretending they are riding a sleigh to a castle, so that she can leave this world without fear.
This is known as one of the most moving scenes in the play. Without any words, Grieg's music tells of the farewell between a mother and her son. The suite was put together in 1888, and since then this piece has been played all over the world. It is short, but it still touches even people who have never seen the play.
This sad music is from Peer Gynt. Åse is Peer's mother. She is very sick. Peer tells her a happy story about a ride to a castle. Only string instruments play this quiet music.

Peer usually causes trouble with his made-up stories. But at his mother's last moments, he uses his imagination to tell her about a happy journey so she will not be afraid. It shows the kind side of a difficult son.
The piece is built almost entirely from one short melody repeated again and again. Each time, the pitch and loudness change, so the sorrow rises and then settles. Grieg shows deep feeling with very simple materials.
Suite No. 1 goes: 'Morning Mood,' 'The Death of Åse,' 'Anitra's Dance,' and 'In the Hall of the Mountain King.' In the play, however, 'Morning Mood' belongs to a later scene. Grieg arranged the pieces in an order that works well in concert, not in story order.
In 1874, Ibsen wrote to Grieg and asked him to compose music for the play. Grieg was only about 30 at the time. The music from this job later became one of the works that made him famous around the world.
