抒情小曲集 第1集より「アリエッタ」

66曲の「抒情小曲集」の最後の曲「余韻」は、なんとこの「アリエッタ」のメロディーをワルツにしたものです。1867年に始まった曲集が、1901年に同じメロディーで幕を閉じます。グリーグは最初の小さな歌を、30年以上たっても大切にしていたのですね。

The last of the 66 Lyric Pieces, Remembrances, turns the Arietta melody into a waltz. The collection began in 1867 and ended in 1901 with the same tune. Grieg treasured his first little song for more than 30 years.

第1集が出版された1867年、グリーグはいとこのニーナと結婚しました。ニーナは歌手で、グリーグの歌曲をたくさん歌い、生涯のパートナーとなります。ニーナの家族には結婚に反対する声もあったと伝えられていますが、2人はグリーグが亡くなるまで連れそいました。

In 1867, the year Book 1 came out, Grieg married his cousin Nina. Nina was a singer who sang many of his songs, and she became his partner for life. It is said that some of Nina's family were against the marriage, but the two stayed together until Grieg's death.

アリアは、オペラの中で歌われる独唱の歌のことです。それに「小さい」を表すイタリア語の「-etta」がついて「アリエッタ」。ピアノ曲なのに歌の名前がついているのは、メロディーが人の声のように歌うからです。グリーグの曲集は、ピアノで歌う歌の本でもあるのです。

An aria is a solo song in an opera. Add the Italian ending '-etta', which means 'small', and you get 'arietta'. This piano piece has a song name because its melody sings like a human voice. Grieg's collection is also a songbook for the piano.

19世紀には、家庭でピアノを弾く人がとても増えました。短くて、上級者でなくても楽しめる曲が多い「抒情小曲集」は、そうした人たちに大人気となりました。この曲集は、グリーグの名前をヨーロッパ中に広める大きな力になったのです。

In the 1800s, more and more people played the piano at home. Lyric Pieces, with many short pieces that are not only for experts, became very popular with them. The collection did a lot to spread Grieg's name across Europe.
