In the Hall of the Mountain King is part of Grieg's music for Peer Gynt, and it closes Suite No. 1. It shows Peer entering the hall of the Mountain King, the king of the trolls, with the king's daughter, and being surrounded by trolls. A short tune that begins quietly in the low instruments gets faster and louder.
Trolls are creatures from Norwegian folk tales who live in the mountains. In the play, Peer wants to marry the Mountain King's daughter, but he refuses to become a true troll, so the trolls turn on him. The piece begins with plucked cellos and double basses and the bassoons, and grows into a huge sound for the full orchestra.
In the original music for the play, a chorus of trolls also sings and shouts at Peer. In the suite, the orchestra plays alone. Its steadily growing excitement has made it famous far beyond the concert hall. A bold arrangement goes with the rowing race in the film The Social Network.
This music is about trolls who live in the mountains. A young man walks into the Troll King's hall. The music starts very quietly. Then it gets faster and louder. At the end, it is wild and crazy!

In a letter to a friend, Grieg joked that this music 'reeks of cow-pies' and that he could hardly bear to listen to it himself. He seemed to think he had overdone the Norwegian folk flavor. Even so, the piece later became one of his best-known works.
In the 2010 film The Social Network, a bold arrangement of this music was used in a rowing race scene. Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, who wrote the film's music, won the Academy Award for Best Original Score for it.
Later in the same act, after more music, the trolls close in and Peer cries out for his mother. Church bells ring in the distance, the trolls flee, and the hall collapses.
The Norwegian title means 'In the Hall of the Old Man of Dovre'. The 'Mountain King', Dovregubben, is the troll king said to live in the Dovre mountains, a real range in central Norway. In Japanese he is called the 'Demon King of the Mountain'.
