The Holberg Suite was written by Grieg in 1884, and its original title is From Holberg's Time. It celebrated the 200th birthday of the Norwegian-born writer Ludvig Holberg. Grieg first wrote it for piano and the next year arranged it himself for string orchestra. Today the string version is the one most often played.
Holberg was born in Bergen in 1684 and became a famous playwright in Denmark; he is called 'the Molière of the North'. Grieg was also born in Bergen. So Grieg borrowed the dance forms of the Baroque era, when Holberg lived. The suite has five movements: Prelude, Sarabande, Gavotte, Air, and Rigaudon.
The string version was first performed in Bergen in 1885, with Grieg conducting. Its forms are old-fashioned, but its harmonies and melodies are full of Grieg's Nordic romance. The lively Prelude is especially popular, and the suite is a favorite of both professional and amateur string orchestras.
This music looks back to an old time. The composer wrote it for a writer's 200th birthday. The writer and the composer were both born in the same city. The music sounds old, like Bach's time, but it is fresh and fun.

In December 1884, a statue of Holberg was unveiled in Bergen, and Grieg also wrote a piece for male choir to be sung outdoors. In a letter, he imagined the choir singing in snow and hail, and worried about it. The weather on the day is said to have been just as bad as he feared.
In the late 17th and 18th centuries, curled and powdered wigs were in fashion among upper-class European men. Grieg is said to have jokingly called this suite a 'periwig piece'. It is music dressed up in old costumes, like a little trip back in time.
The last movement, the Rigaudon, is a cheerful dance said to come from southern France. Here, solo violin and solo viola play a lively duet. In the middle, the mood suddenly changes to something soft and tender.
Holberg's name lives on today. Norway created the Holberg Prize in 2003, an international prize for outstanding scholars in the humanities and related fields, and it has been awarded to researchers from around the world since 2004.
