March of the Trolls is the third piece in Book 5 of Lyric Pieces (Op. 54), published in 1891 by the Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg. Trolls are strange creatures from Nordic folklore that live in the mountains and forests. The music sneaks up quietly, then suddenly bursts out with loud sounds. It is a little scary and a lot of fun.
Lyric Pieces is a set of 66 short piano pieces that Grieg kept writing for more than 30 years, from 1867 to 1901. This piece has fast outer sections full of jumping notes, and a slow, singing middle section with a completely different mood. The middle part can sound like a quiet mountain scene after the trolls have passed by.
Later, Grieg revised an orchestral arrangement by the conductor Anton Seidl and published four pieces from Op. 54 as the Lyric Suite. This piece comes at the very end of the suite. Because its German title means 'March of the Dwarfs', it is also well known by that name in Japan. It is a popular piece at piano recitals, too.
This is a short piano piece by Grieg. It is about trolls. Trolls are strange creatures from old Norwegian stories. The music is very quiet, and then very loud! Grieg's house was called 'Troll Hill'.

From 1885, Grieg lived in a house near Bergen called Troldhaugen, which means 'Troll Hill' in Norwegian. Today it is a museum, and Grieg and his wife are buried on its grounds. So trolls were close to Grieg's life, at least in name.
The Norwegian title, Trolltog, means 'troll procession'. But the German title means 'procession of dwarfs'. In Japan, this German title spread widely, so the piece is often called 'March of the Dwarfs'. In the very same music, the trolls turned into dwarfs, depending on the country!
Lyric Pieces has 10 books and 66 pieces. The first book came out in 1867, and the last in 1901. From his youth to his old age, Grieg kept writing small piano pieces, almost like keeping a diary. March of the Trolls comes from the middle of that long journey, when Grieg was in his forties.
Besides March of the Trolls, Op. 54 includes pieces such as Shepherd's Boy, Notturno and Bell Ringing. Bell Ringing copies the sound of bells by stacking many open fifths. It sounded very new at the time, and some say it looked ahead to Impressionism.
