豆知識

ギリシャ語由来の接頭辞 epi-（上に）と center からできた語で、「震源の上」をそのまま表している。地下の震源そのものは hypocenter または focus と呼び、hypo-（下に）と epi- が上下の対になっている。日本語の「震源」を epicenter と訳す例は多いが、厳密には震源は hypocenter で、epicenter は地表の点だ。新型コロナの流行時には、感染が集中した都市が the epicenter of the outbreak と呼ばれ、比喩の用法が一気に広まった。英国式つづりは epicentre。
