Life Story

Liszt was born in 1811 in the village of Raiding, then part of the Kingdom of Hungary. His father, Adam, worked for the noble Esterházy family and was a passionate music lover. Taught the piano by his father, Franz was amazing audiences in public by around the age of nine. The family then moved to Vienna, where he studied the piano with Carl Czerny, a pupil of Beethoven, and composition with Antonio Salieri.

After moving to Paris, Liszt heard the violin wizard Paganini in 1832 and was stunned. Determined to achieve the same kind of dazzling skill on the piano, he practiced furiously and developed an extraordinary virtuoso technique. From the late 1830s through the 1840s he toured all over Europe, and the wild excitement of his fans was named 'Lisztomania' by the poet Heinrich Heine.

Liszt fell in love with Countess Marie d'Agoult, and they had three children. One of them, Cosima, later became Wagner's wife. In 1847, at the height of his fame, Liszt stopped touring. From the next year he worked as court music director in Weimar, where he named and established the symphonic poem, a new genre in which an orchestra paints a story or picture. He also staged and supported the works of younger composers such as Wagner.

In his later years Liszt grew more religious, and in 1865 he took minor orders in the Catholic Church, becoming known as 'Abbé Liszt'. Traveling between Rome, Weimar and Budapest, he taught a great many pupils, famously without charging them any fees. In 1886, while visiting the Bayreuth Festival run by his daughter Cosima, he caught pneumonia and died at the age of 74.
