Mephisto Waltz No. 1 is a work Liszt wrote around 1859–62. There are versions for orchestra and for piano, and the solo piano version is especially popular as a dazzling showpiece. It depicts the devil Mephistopheles playing dance music at a village inn and casting a spell on everyone there. Liszt wrote four Mephisto Waltzes in all, but this first one is by far the most famous.
It is based not on Goethe but on Faust by the poet Nikolaus Lenau. Faust and Mephisto arrive at a village inn during a wedding party. Mephisto grabs a fiddle from a musician and starts playing bewitching music. Everyone dances wildly, and Faust dances away with a village girl into the night forest, where a nightingale is singing.
The opening is often described as imitating a fiddler tuning up, with notes piled up in fifths. From there, the devil's dance grows wilder and wilder, and in the middle a sweet, melting melody appears. The piano version was dedicated to Liszt's favorite pupil, Carl Tausig. With its huge leaps and lightning-fast repeated notes, it is still a favorite showpiece in concerts.
In this story, the devil goes to a village party. He takes a violin and plays wild music. Everyone starts to dance wildly! The piano music is very fast and very hard. Pianists need a lot of skill and practice to play it well.

Goethe's Faust is the best known, but this piece is based on the verse drama Faust that Lenau published in 1836. Liszt also wrote a 'Faust Symphony' based on Goethe. The story of Faust and the devil was a theme Liszt returned to again and again.
The orchestral version is the second of Two Episodes from Lenau's Faust. The first is 'The Night Procession', a quiet, solemn piece. Liszt wanted the two published together, but that did not happen, and they came out separately. Partly because of this, the Mephisto Waltz is now much better known than The Night Procession.
In the 1880s, late in his life, Liszt wrote Mephisto Waltzes Nos. 2 to 4. They sound much stranger than No. 1, as if ahead of their time. No. 4 in particular was left unfinished and was not published until the 20th century, long after Liszt's death.
Carl Tausig, who received the dedication of the piano version, was a brilliant pianist who began studying with Liszt as a teenager and became his favorite pupil. Liszt surely dedicated this fearsomely hard piece to him because he trusted his skill. Sadly, Tausig died of illness before reaching thirty.
