Chasse-neige' is the last of the twelve pieces in Liszt's Transcendental Études for piano. The French title means a swirl of wind-driven snow, in other words a snowstorm. Fast, trembling notes (tremolos) begin like gently falling snow and grow, little by little, into a raging storm. It is considered one of the hardest pieces in the set.
This set has a long history. It began in 1826, when the teenage Liszt published a set of twelve études. In 1837, he turned them into the fiendishly difficult Grandes études. Then in 1852, he revised them again, making them a little easier to play, and the result is today's Transcendental Études. Titles like 'Chasse-neige' were added at this time.
The 1852 set was dedicated to Carl Czerny, Liszt's teacher, who is also famous for piano exercises still used in lessons today. Later, the pianist-composer Ferruccio Busoni praised 'Chasse-neige' highly as a picture of snow falling solemnly and without end. Not only for its difficulty but also for its power to paint a scene from nature, it is one of Liszt's finest works.
This piano piece is about a snowstorm. At first, the snow falls quietly. Then the wind blows harder and harder. The pianist plays very fast, shaking notes. It is one of Liszt's hardest piano pieces!

The first version came out in 1826 and the last in 1852. Liszt worked on this set for 26 years, from his teens to his forties. Through his experience as a great pianist, youthful exercises were reborn as works of art. Comparing the three versions shows how Liszt grew.
The keys follow a pattern: C major, A minor, F major, D minor and so on, alternating major keys with their related minor keys and adding one flat every two pieces. The first edition of 1826 was planned as 48 exercises going through all the major and minor keys twice, but only twelve were completed and published.
Liszt himself gave titles to most pieces in the 1852 set, such as 'Mazeppa', 'Feux follets' and 'Harmonies du soir'. But Nos. 2 and 10 have no titles. Busoni later gave them nicknames, but they never really caught on.
Czerny, to whom the set was dedicated, was a pupil of Beethoven, and he taught the boy Liszt in Vienna. That makes Liszt a 'grand-pupil' of Beethoven. Czerny is said to have been so amazed by young Liszt's talent that he taught him for free.
