The Piano Sonata in B minor is the only large piano sonata by Franz Liszt, the great wizard of the piano. He wrote it in 1852 and 1853. Most sonatas are divided into several movements, but this one is a single movement that lasts about 30 minutes without a break. From quiet whispers to stormy thunder, one piano creates a world as rich as an orchestra.
The secret of the piece lies in a few short themes heard at the start. Liszt transforms them again and again: sometimes they sound frightening and devilish, and sometimes like a sweet love song. Fast, slow and fast sections follow one another like the movements of a normal sonata, but they all fit inside one big structure. At the time, Liszt was the music director at the court in Weimar.
Liszt dedicated the sonata to Robert Schumann, to thank him for dedicating his own Fantasy in C to Liszt. Liszt's pupil Hans von Bülow gave the first public performance in Berlin in 1857. The critic Eduard Hanslick wrote that anyone who heard it and found it beautiful was beyond help. Today, however, it is called one of the greatest piano works ever written.
This is a very big piano piece. It has only one movement, but it is about 30 minutes long! The pianist plays without a break. Some short melodies come back again and again, and they change each time. When it was new, some people hated it, but now many pianists love it.

There is a story that when young Brahms visited Liszt in Weimar in 1853, Liszt played this sonata for him and Brahms dozed off. It comes from the memoirs of William Mason, an American pianist who was there, but nobody knows for sure whether it really happened.
When the score was published in 1854, Schumann was ill and living in a sanatorium at Endenich, so it was his wife Clara who received it. Clara did not like the piece. In her diary, she called it "nothing but blind noise". The thank-you gift never really reached the person it was meant for.
While many critics were harsh, Liszt's friend Wagner heard the sonata played by Karl Klindworth in 1855 and sent Liszt a letter full of praise. Later, Wagner married Liszt's daughter Cosima, so the two men also became father-in-law and son-in-law.
For such a stormy piece, it does not end with a loud bang. Quiet chords slowly fade away. Liszt's manuscript shows that he first wrote a loud, brilliant ending, then crossed it out and replaced it with the quiet one we hear today.
