The Story

This is the third of Liszt's "Three Concert Études," written in the late 1840s and published in 1849. "Un sospiro" is Italian for "a sigh." A slow melody rises out of sparkling, flowing broken chords. It is a beautiful, dreamlike piece. Its familiar title suits the music's sighing mood.

Its most special feature is that the two hands cross over each other and take turns playing one melody. Broken chords fill the spaces around it, so it sounds as if three hands are playing. Experts think the title "Un sospiro" was most likely not chosen by Liszt himself.

The set was published in 1849. Although it is called an étude, it is not just finger practice; it is meant to be played at concerts. Today it is one of Liszt's best-known works and is often heard at recitals and competitions. It is full of Liszt's charm, mixing brilliance with poetic beauty.

This piano piece sounds like a soft, beautiful sigh. The left hand and the right hand cross over. They take turns playing the melody. It sounds like three hands are playing. It is hard, but it sounds easy and gentle.

The first German edition had only numbers. The Italian titles appeared in a French edition the same year, possibly at the publisher's request. German editions printed in Liszt's lifetime did not use the titles either.

When the melody is passed between the hands and surrounded by broken chords, it sounds like three hands playing. This kind of writing was also famous as a trick of the pianist Sigismond Thalberg, Liszt's rival.

In 1837, at a noble lady's home in Paris, Liszt and Thalberg played one after the other in a famous contest. The hostess is said to have declared that Thalberg was the first pianist in the world, but Liszt was the only one.

Liszt is said to have turned the piano sideways so the audience could see his profile as he played. He is also often called the first pianist to give solo "recitals," concerts with just one performer.
