The Story

Les Préludes is the third of Liszt's thirteen symphonic poems. A 'symphonic poem' is a one-movement orchestral piece that expresses the content of a poem, story or painting. Liszt created this genre, and Les Préludes is the most often performed of his symphonic poems. One short melody keeps changing its character, becoming gentle, stormy, peaceful and grand in turn.

In fact, the piece did not start out as 'Les Préludes'. It was first written in the 1840s as the overture to Les quatre élémens (The Four Elements), a choral work on poems by Joseph Autran. Liszt later reworked it as an independent piece and named it after an ode by the French poet Alphonse de Lamartine. The preface in the score asks whether our life is anything but a series of preludes to an unknown song whose first solemn note is sounded by death.

The first performance took place in Weimar on 23 February 1854, conducted by Liszt himself, and the score was published in 1856. The grand closing fanfare is so striking that it was later used in films and on the radio. There is also a sad chapter in its history: during World War II, beginning in 1941, Nazi German radio and newsreels used a fanfare based on this ending to introduce special military reports from the Eastern Front.

This is music for a big orchestra. It tells a story about life without any words. One short melody changes again and again. Sometimes it is soft, and sometimes it is like a storm. Liszt made a new kind of music called the 'symphonic poem'.

At the start, the strings softly play a short, questioning motif. It is the seed of the whole piece.
In the stormy section, strings and brass swirl wildly, like the trials of life.
At the end comes a grand brass fanfare. The opening seed is reborn as a glorious march.

The piece began as the overture to the choral work The Four Elements. The title 'Les Préludes', taken from Lamartine's poem, was added when the music was mostly finished, and the music was apparently not changed to fit the poem. In other words, the music came first and the poem came later.

The preface printed in the score is said to be a shortened version of a text begun by Princess Carolyne zu Sayn-Wittgenstein, Liszt's partner. Liszt lived with her in Weimar, where he created most of his symphonic poems.

The closing fanfare was used over the opening titles of Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe, an American film serial from 1940. Music written nearly a century earlier helped launch a space hero's adventures.

Les Préludes was one of the very first orchestral works presented under the name 'symphonic poem'. The genre Liszt created was carried on in many great works, such as Richard Strauss's Don Juan, Smetana's Má vlast and Sibelius's Finlandia.
