Hungarian Rhapsody No. 6 is one of Liszt's nineteen Hungarian Rhapsodies for solo piano. A 'rhapsody' is a free-form piece that strings together melodies, often folk-like ones, without following a strict plan. This sixth rhapsody keeps changing its mood: a proud opening, a lively dance, a sad, speech-like section, and a wild, joyful finish.
Liszt was born in Hungary, and from childhood he was familiar with the music played by Romani bands. After he became a great pianist, he used such melodies to write a series of brilliant Hungarian Rhapsodies for piano. No. 6 was finished from music he had written in the 1840s; it was published in Vienna in 1853 and dedicated to Count Antal Apponyi.
Liszt believed that the music played by Romani bands was ancient Hungarian folk music. But in the 20th century, Bartók, Kodály and others collected traditional songs in the countryside and showed that much of this music belonged to popular city music and to the traditions of professional Romani musicians. Even so, the Hungarian Rhapsodies are still loved around the world as showpieces of piano brilliance.
This piano piece comes from Hungary. The music changes many times. First it is proud, then fast, then sad. At the end, it is very, very fast. The pianist must play many big, quick notes with the right hand!
In the fast final section, the right hand plays octaves (two notes eight steps apart) at tremendous speed, again and again. Unless you use your wrist and arm wisely, you will tire out quickly. It tests both a pianist's stamina and technique.
Liszt was so fascinated by Romani music that in 1859 he published a book, On the Gypsies and Their Music in Hungary. In it he argued that Romani music was Hungary's national music. This idea later caused much debate among Hungarians.
Many Hungarian Rhapsodies follow the pattern of Hungarian dance music, with a slow part called 'lassan' and a fast part called 'friska'. In No. 6 too, a sad, speech-like section is followed by the fast finale, which builds to a thrilling climax.
In the Hungarian Rhapsodies, Liszt often imitates the shimmering sound of the cimbalom, a hammered string instrument used by Romani bands, and the improvised ornaments of the violin. Close your eyes, and one piano can sound like a whole lively band.
