This is Yuta. He is seven. And this is Tofu. Tofu is a big white cat. He is very fat. He sleeps all day.
ユウタは七歳の男の子だ。その家には、トウフという大きな白いネコがいた。とても太っていて、一日じゅう寝てばかりいるネコだった。
One day, Yuta comes home from school. "Tofu, where are you?" Tofu does not come.
ある日、ユウタが学校から帰ってきた。「トウフ、どこにいるの？」ところが、ネコは出てこなかった。
Yuta looks under the table. No Tofu. He looks in the kotatsu. No Tofu. He looks in the garden. No Tofu!
ユウタはテーブルの下をのぞいた。トウフはいない。こたつの中ものぞいた。やっぱりいない。庭にも出てみた。どこにもいない！
"Mom, where is Tofu?" "I don't know," says Mom. "Ask Grandma." "But Grandma is not home!"
「お母さん、トウフはどこ？」「さあ、知らないわ」とお母さん。「おばあちゃんに聞いてごらん」「でも、おばあちゃんは出かけてるよ！」
Then the door opens. "I'm home!" says Grandma. She has a big bag. The bag moves. The bag says, "Meow!"
そのとき、玄関の戸が開いた。「ただいま！」おばあちゃんが帰ってきたのだ。手には大きな袋をさげている。その袋が、もぞもぞと動いた。そして袋が「ニャー！」と鳴いた。
Out comes Tofu! He has a fish in his mouth.
中から飛び出してきたのは、トウフだった！ 口に魚を一匹くわえている。
Grandma laughs. "Tofu comes to the fish shop with me. Every day!" So Tofu does not sleep all day!
おばあちゃんは笑った。「トウフはね、わたしと一緒に魚屋さんへ行くのよ。毎日ね！」なんと、トウフは一日じゅう寝ていたわけではなかったのだ！
After dinner, Grandma smiles. "Tomorrow, a new friend comes." "Who?" asks Yuta. "It's a secret." Tofu's ears go up.
夕ごはんのあと、おばあちゃんがにっこりした。「明日、新しいお友だちが来るのよ」「だれ？」とユウタは聞いた。「それは秘密」トウフの耳が、ぴんと立った。
