意味と背景

1970〜80年代に北朝鮮が日本人を連れ去った問題のこと。日本政府はこれを重大な人権問題と位置づけて解決を訴え続けているが、多くの被害者や家族が高齢になる中でも、いまだ帰国できていない人が多く残されている痛ましい問題だ。

豆知識

日本政府はこれまでに17人を拉致被害者として認定しており、2002年には5人が帰国を果たした。abduction は ab-（離れて）＋ duct（導く）という組み立てで「連れ去る」という意味になり、身代金目的の誘拐を思わせる響きが強い kidnap とは少しニュアンスが異なる語として使い分けられている。政府はこの問題を英語で発信する際、abduction を一貫して用い、国際社会に理解を求めている。
