Once upon a time there was a little girl. Her father and mother had died, and she was very poor. She had no house and no bed. She had only the clothes she was wearing and a little piece of bread. But she was good and kind, and she was not afraid. She believed that God was with her.
She walked out into the fields. Soon she met a poor old man. "Please give me something to eat," he said. "I am so hungry." The girl gave him all her bread. "God bless you," she said, and she walked on.
Then she met a child who was crying. "My head is so cold. Please give me something to put on it." So the girl took off her cap and gave it to the child.
A little later, she met another child. This child had no jacket and was shaking with cold. The girl gave her jacket. Then she met another child and gave away her dress.
At last, night came, and she came to a dark forest. There, one more child asked for her shirt. The girl thought, "It is dark. No one can see me. I can give away my shirt, too."
And she gave it away. Now she had nothing at all.
She stood all alone in the dark. Then the stars began to fall from the sky. As they fell, they turned into shining silver coins! And suddenly she was wearing a new shirt made of the finest, softest cloth.
She picked up the silver coins, and she was never poor again for the rest of her life.
