People say that Nasreddin Hodja lived in Turkey a long time ago. He was a funny man, and he was very clever, too. People still tell his stories today. Here are two of them.
The first story is about a coat.
One day, Nasreddin went to a big party. He was wearing his old work clothes. Nobody said hello to him. Nobody gave him a seat. Nobody gave him food.
So Nasreddin went home. He put on his best coat. It was long and beautiful. Then he went back to the party.
Now everyone smiled at him. "Hello, Hodja! Please sit here!" they said. They gave him the best seat. They gave him soup, rice, and meat.
Nasreddin took some meat. He put it in the sleeve of his coat. He took some soup. He put it in his coat, too.
"Eat, my coat, eat!" he said.
Everyone looked at him. "Hodja, what are you doing?" they asked.
"Well," said Nasreddin, "when I came in my old clothes, you gave me nothing. When I came in my coat, you gave me all this food. So the food is for my coat, not for me!"
The second story is about a pot.
One day, Nasreddin borrowed a big pot from his neighbor. The next day, he took it back. There was a small pot inside it.
"What is this little pot?" asked the neighbor.
"Your pot had a baby," said Nasreddin. "So the baby is yours, too."
The neighbor laughed. "This man is crazy," he thought. "But I got a free pot!" He took both pots.
A few weeks later, Nasreddin borrowed the big pot again. But this time, he did not take it back. A week went by. Then two weeks went by.
At last, the neighbor came to his house. "Where is my pot?" he asked.
"I am very sorry," said Nasreddin. "Your pot died."
"Died?" said the neighbor. "A pot can't die!"
Nasreddin smiled. "You believed that your pot had a baby," he said. "So why can't you believe that it died?"
