Long ago, the Sun and the Moon lived on the Earth. They were married, and they had a house.
むかしむかし、太陽と月は地上に住んでいました。二人は夫婦で、家を持っていました。
The Sun had a best friend. It was the Water. Every day, the Sun visited the Water. They talked and laughed together.
太陽には、水という親友がいました。毎日、太陽は水をたずねていきました。二人は一緒に話したり笑ったりしました。
But the Water never visited the Sun.
でも、水が太陽をたずねてくることは、一度もありませんでした。
One day, the Sun said, "Water, you are my best friend. Why do you never come to my house?"
ある日、太陽は言いました。「水さん、きみはぼくの親友だ。どうしてぼくの家に一度も来てくれないの？」
"Your house is too small," said the Water. "I have many people. I have fish and frogs. I have crabs and snakes. I have crocodiles, too. If we all come, there is no room for you."
「きみの家は小さすぎるよ」と、水は言いました。「ぼくには仲間がたくさんいるんだ。魚やカエルがいる。カニやヘビもいる。ワニもいる。みんなで行ったら、きみのいる場所がなくなってしまうよ」
"Then I will build a big house," said the Sun. "Please come."
「それなら、大きな家をつくるよ」と、太陽は言いました。「ぜひ来てね」
The Sun went home. He told the Moon, "Let's build a big, big house for the Water." "Yes," said the Moon.
太陽は家に帰りました。そして月に言いました。「水さんのために、うんと大きな家をつくろう」「ええ」と、月は答えました。
So they worked and worked. At last, they had a very big house. "Now the Water can come," said the Sun.
そこで二人は、せっせと働きました。とうとう、とても大きな家ができました。「これで水さんが来られるね」と、太陽は言いました。
The next day, the Water came to the door. "Can I come in?" asked the Water.
次の日、水が戸口にやって来ました。「入ってもいいかい？」と、水はききました。
"Yes, please come in!" said the Sun.
「うん、どうぞ入って！」と、太陽は言いました。
The Water came in with the fish and the frogs. The water was up to the Sun's knees.
水は魚やカエルと一緒に入ってきました。水は太陽のひざまで来ました。
"Can my people come in, too?" asked the Water.
「ぼくの仲間も入っていいかい？」と、水はききました。
"Yes, of course," said the Sun.
「うん、もちろん」と、太陽は言いました。
More water came in with the crabs and the snakes. Now the water was up to the Sun's head. The Sun and the Moon sat on the table.
もっとたくさんの水が、カニやヘビと一緒に入ってきました。今では水は太陽の頭まで来ていました。太陽と月はテーブルの上にすわりました。
"Can more people come in?" asked the Water.
「もっと仲間が入ってもいいかい？」と、水はききました。
"Yes, yes," said the Sun. He was a kind friend.
「うん、いいよ」と、太陽は言いました。太陽はやさしい友だちだったのです。
More and more water came in with the crocodiles and the big fish. The Sun and the Moon climbed up onto the roof.
ワニや大きな魚と一緒に、水はどんどん入ってきました。太陽と月は屋根の上によじのぼりました。
"Can more come in?" asked the Water.
「もっと入ってもいいかい？」と、水はききました。
"Yes," said the Sun and the Moon. But now the water was over the roof!
「いいよ」と、太陽と月は言いました。でもそのときにはもう、水は屋根をこえていました！
The Sun and the Moon had to go up and up. They went up into the sky.
太陽と月は、上へ上へとのぼるしかありませんでした。そして空へのぼっていきました。
"Oh, well," said the Moon. "The sky is a nice place, too."
「まあ、いいわ」と、月は言いました。「空もすてきなところだもの」
And from that day, the Sun and the Moon have lived in the sky. And the Water lives on the Earth, with all its people.
その日から、太陽と月は空に住んでいます。そして水は、仲間たちみんなと一緒に、地上に住んでいるのです。
