A farmer had a faithful dog named Sultan. Sultan was very old, and he had no teeth.
One day the farmer said to his wife, "Sultan is no use now. Tomorrow I will get rid of him." "But he worked for us for so long," said his wife. "He cannot even scare a thief," said the farmer.
Sultan heard everything, and he was very sad. That night he went into the forest to see his friend, the wolf.
"Don't worry," said the wolf. "I have a plan. Tomorrow your master and his wife will work in the field. They will put their baby in the shade. You lie down next to the baby. I will come and take it. You run after me, and I will drop it. Then you take it back."
The next day, everything happened just like that. Sultan brought the baby back, and the farmer was so happy. "Good old Sultan! You will stay with us all your life." He gave Sultan soft bread and his own pillow.
Soon the wolf came again. "Now help me. I want one of your master's fat sheep." "No," said Sultan. "I am true to my master." He told the farmer, and that night the farmer chased the wolf away with a big stick. "You will be sorry!" cried the wolf.
The next morning the wolf sent a wild pig to Sultan. "Come to the forest and fight!" Sultan had only one friend to help him, an old cat with three legs.
The cat walked slowly, and her tail stood straight up. "Look at that tail! It is a sword!" thought the wolf and the pig. And every time the cat hopped, they thought, "She is picking up a stone!"
The wild pig hid under some leaves, and the wolf climbed up a tree.
Sultan and the cat saw no one. Then one of the pig's ears moved under the leaves. "A mouse!" thought the cat. She jumped on the ear and bit it hard.
The pig jumped up and ran away, screaming, "Not me! The bad one is up in the tree!"
Sultan and the cat looked up and saw the wolf. The wolf felt very silly. He came down and made friends with Sultan again.
