Long ago, a kind old man and his wife had a white dog. His name was Shiro. Shiro means white.
One day, Shiro ran to the field and barked. "Dig here! Woof, woof!" The old man dug, and he found gold coins! "Thank you, Shiro!"
Their neighbor was a greedy old man. He saw the gold. "Give me that dog!" He took Shiro to his field. He pulled the dog and said, "Find gold for me!" Shiro barked, so he dug. But he found only old shoes and broken plates. He was angry, and he chased Shiro away.
Poor Shiro came home very sick and tired. Soon he died. The kind old man and his wife cried and cried. They put him in the ground under a small tree.
The tree grew very big very fast. The old man cut it and made a usu. A usu is a big wooden tool for making rice cakes. When they made rice cakes in it, the rice turned into gold!
The greedy neighbor took the usu, too. But his rice turned into mud. He was so angry that he burned the usu.
The kind old man took the ashes home. A light wind blew, and the ashes flew onto a dead cherry tree. Suddenly, pink flowers opened on every branch!
Just then, the lord was passing by. The old man climbed a tree and threw more ashes. "Let the dead trees bloom!" Flowers came out everywhere. "Wonderful!" said the lord. He gave the old man many gifts.
The greedy neighbor tried, too. But his ashes flew into the lord's eyes! The lord's men chased him away. And the kind old man and his wife lived happily, with Shiro always in their hearts.
