Long ago, an old man and an old woman lived near a river. They had no children.
One day, the old woman was washing clothes in the river. Then a big peach came down the river. Donbura-ko, donbura-ko! "What a big peach!" she said. She carried it home.
The old man took a knife. But before he could cut it, the peach opened. A baby boy jumped out! "Hello!" said the baby. The old man and the old woman were so happy. They named him Momotaro. Momo means peach.
Momotaro ate a lot. He grew big and strong. One day he said, "Oni live on Onigashima, Demon Island. Oni are big bad monsters. They take people's money and food. I will go and stop them."
The old woman made kibi-dango for him. Kibi-dango are sweet millet dumplings. "These are the best in Japan," she said.
On the road, a dog came. "Momotaro, can I have a dumpling? Then I will go with you." "Here you are," said Momotaro. Next a monkey came. Then a pheasant came. A pheasant is a bird with a long tail. They each got a dumpling, and they all came along.
They went to the island by boat. The oni were having a big party. "Let's go!" said Momotaro.
The dog bit their toes. The monkey pulled their hair. The pheasant pecked their noses. Momotaro threw the biggest oni down on the ground. "Stop! Stop! We are sorry!" cried the oni. "We will never be bad again."
The oni gave back all the treasure. Momotaro and his friends carried it home. The old man and the old woman cried with joy. And they all ate kibi-dango together.
