One spring day, a swallow and a crow sat on the same branch. The swallow had shiny blue feathers and a white front. She looked at the crow and laughed.
"Your feathers are so black and plain," she said. "Look at mine! They are blue and bright. Everyone says I am beautiful. Nobody says that about you."
The crow did not get angry. "Your feathers are very nice," he said.
"Of course they are," said the swallow. "In spring, I fly in the sunshine, and everyone looks at me."
"Yes, in spring," said the crow. "But what about winter? Your thin feathers can't keep you warm. In the cold wind, you must fly far away. My feathers are not pretty, but they are thick and warm. I can stay here all year, in the snow and the rain."
The swallow did not answer. She looked at the crow's thick black feathers. Then she looked at her own thin blue ones.
Autumn came, and the wind got cold. The swallow left her home and flew away to a warm land in the south. But the crow stayed on his branch. He was warm in the snow, and he was happy.
The next spring, the swallow came back. She sat on the same branch next to the crow. This time, she did not laugh. "Hello, friend," she said. "You look very warm."
