It was a cold winter morning. Snow covered the fields. A kind farmer walked home through the snow.
On the path, he saw something long and gray. It was a snake. It did not move. It was cold and stiff, like a stick of ice.
"Oh, poor snake," said the farmer. "You are almost frozen. You can't live in this cold." He picked up the snake. It was very cold in his hands.
The farmer opened his warm coat and put the snake inside, next to his body. "There," he said. "Now you can get warm." He walked home slowly.
Little by little, the snake got warmer. Then it started to move. Its eyes opened. Its tongue came out. Hiss, hiss.
The farmer smiled. "Good! You are alive!" he said.
But the snake was a snake. It did not say thank you. It opened its mouth and bit the farmer on the arm. The bite was very bad. The farmer fell down in the snow.
"Oh," he cried. "I was kind to you. I saved your life. And this is how you thank me?" The snake did not answer. It went away into the grass.
The poor farmer lay in the cold snow. "I learned a hard lesson today," he said sadly. "Some animals never change. And some people are like that too."
