One day, a wolf came to a fox's house. He was very angry. "You stole my meat!" he shouted. "I know it was you!"
"Me? Steal your meat?" said the fox. "No, I did not! I never steal!"
They shouted and shouted. "You did!" "I didn't!" "You did!" "I didn't!" All the animals came to watch.
"Stop!" said an old monkey. "We need a judge. I can be your judge. Each of you, tell me your story."
First, the wolf told his story. "I had a big piece of meat," he said. "I put it under a tree. Then I went to the river for a drink. I came back, and it was gone! And the fox was near the tree!"
Then the fox told his story. "I was near the tree, but I took nothing," he said. "Maybe a bird took it. And maybe there was no meat at all!"
The monkey listened carefully. He scratched his head. He looked at the wolf. He looked at the fox. Then he spoke.
"Here is my answer," said the monkey. "Wolf, I don't think you really lost any meat. You often lie. And Fox, I think you stole something. You often steal. So you are both in the wrong!"
The wolf and the fox looked at each other. They had nothing to say. Everyone knew the monkey was right.
