In a big field, many hares lived together. They had long ears and fast legs. But they were always afraid. A bird flew over them, and they ran. A leaf fell from a tree, and they ran. A dog barked far away, and they ran and ran.
広い野原に、たくさんのウサギが一緒に暮らしていました。ウサギたちは耳が長く、足も速いのですが、いつもびくびくしていました。鳥が頭の上を飛ぶと、逃げ出しました。木から葉っぱが落ちると、逃げ出しました。遠くで犬がほえると、どこまでも逃げていきました。
"We are afraid of everything," said one hare. "Every day, we run and hide. I am so tired of it."
「ぼくたちは何でも怖いんだ」と、一匹のウサギが言いました。「毎日、逃げては隠れている。もううんざりだよ」
"Me too," said another hare. "Everyone is stronger than us. Foxes, dogs, eagles... We never have a happy day."
「ぼくもだ」と、別のウサギが言いました。「誰もかれも、ぼくたちより強いんだ。キツネ、犬、ワシ……。ぼくたちには、幸せな日なんて一日もない」
"Then let's leave this field," said the first hare. "Let's go far, far away and never come back!" All the hares agreed.
「それなら、この野原を出ていこう」と、最初のウサギが言いました。「遠く、遠くへ行って、二度と戻ってこないことにしよう！」ウサギたちはみんな賛成しました。
So all the hares ran together toward the lake. Their feet went thump, thump, thump on the ground.
そこで、ウサギたちはそろって湖のほうへ走っていきました。ウサギたちの足が、地面をドン、ドン、ドンと踏み鳴らしました。
Many frogs were sitting by the lake in the sun. They heard the loud thump, thump, thump. "Oh no! Something big is coming!" cried the frogs. Splash, splash, splash! They all jumped into the water and hid.
湖のほとりでは、たくさんのカエルが日なたぼっこをしていました。カエルたちは、大きなドン、ドン、ドンという音を聞きつけました。「大変だ！ 何か大きなものがやって来るぞ！」と、カエルたちは叫びました。ポチャン、ポチャン、ポチャン！ カエルたちはみんな水の中に飛びこんで、隠れてしまいました。
The hares stopped. They looked at the water. All the frogs were gone.
ウサギたちは立ち止まって、水を見ました。カエルは一匹残らずいなくなっていました。
Then the oldest hare started to laugh. "Look, my friends!" he said. "Those frogs were afraid of us! Of us! So other animals are afraid, too. It is not only us!"
すると、いちばん年寄りのウサギが笑いだしました。「見てごらん、みんな！」と、そのウサギは言いました。「あのカエルたちは、ぼくたちを怖がったんだ！ このぼくたちを！ ということは、ほかの動物だって怖がるんだ。怖がりなのは、ぼくたちだけじゃないんだよ！」
"That's true!" said the other hares. They felt a little brave. "Maybe our life is not so bad," they said. So they turned around and went home to their field.
「本当だ！」と、ほかのウサギたちも言いました。ウサギたちは、少しだけ勇気がわいてきました。「ぼくたちの暮らしも、そんなに悪くないのかもしれないね」と、ウサギたちは言いました。そして、くるりと向きを変えて、自分たちの野原へ帰っていきました。
